EU to strength commitments to Ukraine in defence and security

EU continues to strengthen support and links with Ukraine in defence sphere despite forecasts on the “checkmate” or “stalemate” on the battlefield.

Bloomberg published info that the European Union has presented member states with a framework to give Ukraine lasting security commitments, including a mechanism for longer-term military support, the training of Ukrainian troops and help to boost the country’s defense industry.

The draft paper, which was seen by Bloomberg, will be discussed by EU ambassadors this week and by the bloc’s leaders next month. It will also form the basis of consultations with Kyiv and the G-7.

The EU’s framework aims to build on those bilateral arrangements, with proposals including:

  • “A predictable, efficient, sustainable and long-term mechanism for the provision of military equipment to Ukraine” that mobilizes the European defense industry
  • Providing training to Ukrainian armed forces
  • Greater cooperation with the Ukrainian defense industry to boost capacity and align standards
  • Strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter cyber and hybrid threats as well as disinformation
  • Supporting Ukraine’s de-mining efforts and addressing contamination caused by explosive remnants
  • Helping Ukraine with its reform agenda relating to its EU accession process, as well as boosting its ability to monitor stocks of firearms, light weapons and ammunition and counter any illegal trafficking
  • Supporting the country’s energy transition and nuclear safety efforts
  • Sharing intelligence and satellite imagery

NGRN pays attention on the defence industry track of this draft. It`s extremely important both for Ukrainian Armed Force’s long-term capabilities and EU countries armed forces readiness for resistance against Russian aggression.

After 20 years in media as well as in security and defence analysis and consultancy, Mykhailo is an experienced researcher in the sphere of international relations, national resilience and new generation warfare. Served 12 years in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, he gained his Master’s Degree in International Journalism from the Institute of Journalism, Kyiv Shevchenko National University (2007). Having started his career as a journalist at Defense Express, he became the Editor-in-Chief of the Export Control Newsletter magazine, and then the Deputy Director of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies.

He was the founder (2009) of the EU CACDS office in Prague (Czech Republic), and was responsible for the coordination of CACDS international activities, its regional sections, and projects with NATO and the EU. Mykhailo also was the member of the editorial border of the CACDS Analytical Bulletin Challenges and Risks.

Now Mykhailo is a chief and one the drivers of new international project – The New Geopolitics Research Network which is an independent and nonpartisan initiative to provide a think tank platform for researchers, academics, experts, journalists, intellectuals who aspire to shape a new facets of geopolitics.
