The New Geopolitics Research Network brings to your attention a summary of Vassil Sotirov (Vice President, European Journalist Association (the communication network) speech, made during online webinar “Geopolitics. 30 Years After. Ukraine and Bulgaria. Life after communism”
Key points:
- Historical ties between Ukraine and Bulgaria are very close. There is a sizeable Bulgarian minority in Ukraine. Many Ukrainians took part in the Russo-Turkish War, after which the Bulgarian Kingdom was established.
- The problem for Bulgaria and its politicians is to find a balance in positions between Ukraine and Russia. Finding a balance is difficult not solely because of their historical ties with Russia but also because of Bulgaria’s historical experiences. Bulgaria has suffered a lot because of confrontations between major powers in the Balkans.
- A perilous situation is taking place in the Black Sea region, which is now turning into the most important flash point between the world’s superpowers such as Russia, the USA, and China. Such a confrontation can turn into a hot conflict, which can lead us into a new war. Bulgaria is afraid of being at the front line of such a war
